A boutique workplace . . . with a big vision

A boutique workplace . . . with a big vision

For Winnie Ho, a postgraduate student enrolled in the Master of International Hotel Management at BMIHMS at Torrens University, a career change has really taken off.

Winnie started her career in media and marketing. With years of experience behind her including marketing for five star hotels in Macau, she realised it was time for a career change. In particular, Winnie understood that where she had strengths in running frontline parts of a business, she did not really understand how the operations were run. She hoped that a return to study would enable her to find flexibility and a workplace where her ideas would be heard and implemented.

Giving herself just one term at the BMIHMS Sydney Campus to acquaint herself with Australia, Sydney and life as a student once again, Winnie began her search for a casual position.

What began as a casual guest services agent (GSA) position saw Winnie stay on and progress to a full-time, six-month industry placement position as Front Office Manager as part of her degree. When Winnie graduates in 2 short weeks, she will find herself full-time once more; this time, being promoted to Hotel Manager of Best Western Haven Glebe, a 56 room, boutique hotel located in an inner city suburb of Sydney.

A common dream for hotel management students is to manage their own hotel; often unrealistically immediately following graduation. However, Winnie’s story so far is unique and she really has achieved this seemingly impossible dream.

“Boutique hotels have less staff to rely on, so cross-skilling is key.” explains Shabir Satya, CEO, Everjuve Hospitality Management.

As the person who initially employed Winnie, Shabir explains “There is a greater opportunity for staff to do more. Winnie wanted to learn hotel operations and we were able to upskill her and fast-track her development. We strongly believe that staff should leave us with better skills than when they arrive.” he said.

In the beginning as a casual GSA, Winnie’s day included check-ins and check outs, phone reservations, guest queries and cash handing. Within six months she was managing marketing strategies, sharing her opinions on interior samples for rooms and rebranding for the property’s upcoming refurbishment. As part of a small team of three, she contributed to defining new targets and the direction of the business.

Promoted to Front Office Manager, Winnie now hires staff herself. She is in charge of rostering, negotiating new contracts and organising suppliers. Part of her learning at BMIHMS sparked an idea, which saw all the guest bathrooms using toiletries with sustainable dispensing methods.

Winnie is currently hiring new GSA staff and striving to reach final completion before the grand opening of the Best Western Haven Glebe in the coming months. She says she is happy, having found such a great place to work where her opinions are heard and suggestions implemented. Her passion now is to drive the success of this business and she envisions a satisfying hospitality career ahead of her.

When Winnie Ho graduates in April 2106 she will take on the position of Hotel Manager at Best Western Haven Glebe. The team at BMIHMS at Torrens University wishes her all the best on such a fantastic achievement.

Career Focus Days – Experience life at BMIHMS firsthand

Career Focus Days – Experience life at BMIHMS firsthand

Growing up Chris Dennis regularly helped his grandmother host Sunday luncheons at her home in regional Victoria. He enjoyed sitting down weeks in advance and planning every occasion with her. It was a family tradition to ensure that each guest was made to feel welcome upon his or her arrival. However, he had never thought of a career in hospitality. That was until his head of school at Gippsland Grammar School, Victoria, suggested he check out Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) at Torrens University, and look into a future in event management.

“I have always been a people person, and enjoy entertaining others; getting satisfaction from seeing other people happy. After some extensive research, it was clear to me that I could make a serious career for myself, doing something that I really enjoy. A career in event management can be much more than organising a luncheon for friends and family,” Chris says.

Prior to enrolling with BMIHMS, Chris participated in one of the Career Focus Days (CFD) programs. CFD is a 3-day residential program – beginning at the Leura Campus, and concluding in Sydney. They are a great opportunity for students interested in studying at BMIHMS to see firsthand what life is like as a student. Students get to hear about specialist business degrees, participate in classes, hear about industry placements all over the world, and meet current students and academic staff.

“Attending the CFD was a great way to experience what life would be like for me at the Leura and Sydney campuses. I was able to speak with current students and immerse myself in both practical tutorials and theoretical lectures. Being able to see what types of jobs will be available to me upon graduation was great also,” he says.

In addition to experiencing student life on campus, attendees of the CFD also get to visit a signature hotel property in the city. Visits include behind the scenes insights into the daily operation of a large-scale hotel, as well as the opportunity to network with industry professionals.

“Getting to see a big hotel in the centre of Sydney was fantastic. This experience was the perfect ‘try before you buy’ opportunity. It really did confirm for me that BMIHMS was the right choice,” Chris says.

Living in a regional area meant that Chris would need to move away from his family to pursue any further study. Chris was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship from BMIHMS, assisting him with the costs of living away from home and relocating interstate. BMIHMS has numerous scholarships available for students to apply for each intake.

Chis is currently completing a dual business degree, majoring in International Hotel and Resort Management and International Event Management.

Term one a success for commencing students at Leura Campus

Term one a success for commencing students at Leura Campus

Students who were busy unpacking their bags 10 weeks ago and adjusting to life at Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) at Torrens University are now busy preparing for their first taste of exam pressure. The first intake of students for the year arrived in January, and moved to our Leura Campus – many students relocating from interstate and overseas.  Orientation Week and the first few weeks can be tough even for the most confident students. We thought we’d catch up with some of our newest students, and see how they have found their first term with BMIHMS.

O’Week is the best opportunity for students to get to know their classmates and become familiar with their teachers and support staff before classes commence. New students were briefed on what to expect during their first few weeks and how to make the most of every opportunity. Students were fitted with their uniforms and received textbooks and iBooks; ready to conquer whatever was given to them.

“Orientation week was a great opportunity to meet everyone, become familiar with the campus and the local surrounds. I quickly made a really close group of friends – we do everything together now,” she said.

After completing their orientation and meeting returning second year students, new students quickly settled into residential campus life, and began to focus on their studies. Students met their lecturers and practical learning instructors, discovering the wealth of knowledge available at their fingertips. The approach to learning at BMIHMS has been well received.

Felicity Jensen from Melbourne said:

“Because the lecturers are industry professionals, with relevant experience, you really do take on board what they are telling you.”

Many students have learnt firsthand the importance of finding the balance between academic study and the many social activities that are held throughout each term. One theme that is consistent with students is how warm and welcoming BMIHMS is.

Lauren Pietsch from NSW said:

“The school culture is very friendly and collaborative. Everyone works together and helps each other.”

One of the biggest appeals of studying at BMIHMS is the culturally diverse student body. Students learn about the cultures of their classmates and make lasting connections. For Felicity Jenson, having a roommate from Laos is something she would have never had the opportunity to experience if she hadn’t come to BMIHMS.

Many students are already thinking about their Industry Placement scheduled for the second half of the year. Sanila Khosla has always wanted to come to Australia, and is excited about her upcoming industry placement. She is hoping to secure a position in either Cairns or Brisbane.

Blake Graham from NSW has already arranged to travel abroad for his first Industry Placement, and is due to head to Dubai after term two.

“I have been working with the Career Development Team for my first Industry Placement. I am now choosing between four hotels. A Food and Beverage placement in Dubai will be really cool,” he said.
