Tomas Podborsky
Student spotlight: Tomas Podborsky

      Tomas Podborsky

Student spotlight: Tomas Podborsky

Alyssa Bennett, BMIHMS Marketing Ambassador, chats to fellow student Tomas Podborsky, getting the lowdown on his Industry Placement in Perth and life in general at BMIHMS.

Tomas Podborsky, an international student from The Czech Republic is currently undertaking aBachelor of Business specialising in Event Management and has recently completed his Industry Placement at Crown Perth.

BMIHMS first introduced Tomas to Crown Hotels during a guest lecture in his first year.

“It was the best guest speaker presentation I had heard. It inspired me to want to work for them,” he said.

“Students were amazed by the Crown brand and were lining up afterwards to hand out their resumes. I was very excited to be one of those to receive a call back and was thrilled to be offered a place in the Crown Perth team.

“I worked for Crown as part of my first Industry Placement (IP). This meant moving to Perth, a beautiful Australian city that is quite busy in the CBD, but as soon as I left the centre, I found myself in many quiet zones near beautiful parks with gorgeous views.

“Perth is full of cafes and small bars with a very friendly vibe. It reminded me a little of Prague, my home, even though the culture of Australia is very different and much more open from Czech. Australians are more talkative; the relaxed lifestyle and multicultural society is great and my time here it has definitely brought out a different and more open side of my personality.

“At work it didn’t take long to get to know my way around and I learned quickly. The more confidence I had the more I started to really enjoy my work. I worked long hours, but it rarely felt like it. It was such a big and dynamic environment. The staff members of Crown Perth were welcoming and I fitted in straight away. I enjoyed the teamwork and the style of service that was provided on a daily basis. I found that my managers were very approachable, always available and really enjoyed their work. If they were ever strict, it would always motivate the team to deliver the excellent service that Crown stands for.

“Crown Perth exposed me to a variety of events –the opportunities were amazing. I was involved in cocktail parties, conferences, gala dinners, weddings (with several different international flavours), VIP guest events, Chinese banquets and more. The size of the events varied from 10 to over 1000 guests. One event that stuck in my memory was a fundraising gala dinner, where the guests enjoyed their dinner while watching live boxing matches in a ring placed in the middle of the grand ballroom. Guests were standing, chanting and supporting the fighters. It was such an amazing atmosphere.

“My experience in Australia at BMIHMS and with Crown Perth was definitely worth traveling across the world for. I would recommend Crown for all students that seek a dynamic working environment, and are looking for a fun Industry Placement.
“Crown Resorts has recently become one of the School’s Industry Partners, forming an official connection with the BMIHMS. The School is expecting to send many more students to have work experiences and develop their career prospects through this connection.”

Tomas is about to embark on his second Industry Placement through BMIHMS and his International Event Management Degree. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to hearing more from him on his return.

Many thanks to Tomas Podborsky for sharing your story.

学生明星:Emily Hoskins – Three Pillar Award奖得主
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Emily Hoskins – Three Pillar Award Recipient

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Emily Hoskins – Three Pillar Award Recipient

Red wine and strong coffee are two things that Emily Hoskins is very fond of. So how did her love for the two help her excel whilst studying an Event Management Degree with BMIHMS, and secure a job before completing her final exam? We caught up with Emily shortly after completing her exams to find out more.

What a year you have had Emily! Would you mind telling us a little about what you have been up to?

EH – This year (2015), especially term 4, has been fantastic. I have been busy completing my final year of study. I have only just put the pen down from my final exam. In addition to my studies, I have been very involved with Coffee Time at the Sydney campus. At the beginning of the term I took over the day-to-day management. It has been a great experience being able to work with other students, getting to know them, and gaining a feel for what it would be like to run a small café.

To really top things off for this year, I was recently awarded the Three Pillar Award for Term 4, 2015. After being nominated, the selection committee chose me as the recipient as they felt I best met the criteria and theme, creating shared value.

Congratulations Emily! You have definitely finished your time with BMIHMS on a high note. For those readers who may now know a great deal about Coffee Time and what is involved, could you tell us a little more about your involvement with its operation?

EH – Coffee Time is a student run and operated coffee shop. It is operated with a daily rotating roster. Students practice and refine their hands on skills, providing welcome pick me ups for both students and staff.

The team that I worked with included 6 supervisors and around 20 baristas. I had previously been involved with Coffee Time as a supervisor, but never thought I would end up running it.

Now that you have finished your studies, do you feel that being involved with Coffee Time has helped prepare you for your next chapter, as you start your career?

EH – Coffee Time really allowed me to develop both professionally and personally. I had the perfect opportunity to step up and really see what I was capable of. I gained valuable management experience, and dealt with many different personality types. I was able to really improve my communication skills. The practical application of many of the things I had learnt in the classroom has really helped me, and will pay off now that I am heading into the workforce full-time.

You are obviously held in high regard by your both your peers, but also the staff at BMIHMS. This is evident by you being awarded the Three Pillar Award for term 4, 2015. Can you tell us what the selection criteria are and how you feel you meet them.

EH – To be awarded the Three Pillar Award the student must excel in three key areas. There must be evidence that the person has grown professionally and personally, developed their practical skillset, and consistently achieved academically.

My involvement with Coffee Time helped me to meet the criteria, along with having consistent grades. Also, during my first year I was involved in the organisation and execution of a TEDx event in Leura.

Now that you are reaching graduation day, what are your plans for 2016 and beyond?

EH – I will be returning to Shadow Fox Wines in Melbourne. I have taken a position in their Food and Beverage team. I completed my second industry placement with Shadow Fox Wines, and was very pleased when I was given the opportunity to join the team again. I am also heading overseas next year, and will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro with my dad. Longer term I am quite keen to get into hospitality training, and possibly education. Maybe even HR.

You definitely have an exciting future ahead for you Emily, and we wish you all the best!

Student spotlight: Wilhelm Lund,
Bachelor of Business (International Event Management)

Student spotlight: Wilhelm Lund,
Bachelor of Business (International Event Management)

Will has made his mark on campus, hitting the ground running and getting involved in event coordination since he arrived. Here he takes some time to answer our questions regarding his industry placement, future goals and ultimate career goals in event management.

What did you do for your second placement? How was it?

I was a porter at Intercontinental Melbourne. As a porter, your duties are to deliver the guests bags to their room and park their cars. That being said, you are the face of the hotel because you are the first person to meet and greet the guest. This fit me really well as I love to be approachable and I love to talk to people. Another plus is that you get some really nice cars to park!

What was your favourite thing about Melbourne?

Melbourne is AMAZING! I loved the city, everyone is so friendly and nice there. It is easy to get around with the trams in the city and everything is just within a short ride away. The best thing is the culture and food you can find. There are so many different varieties you can chose from and if you want you can find some really cool places most people don’t know about.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I’m looking at working on a cruise ship for a couple of years to travel around the world and see different places.  I see this industry as one that can give me opportunities all over the world whilst I am working and building up some great experiences.

What is your ultimate career goal?

My ultimate career goal would be to organise the Olympic Games. I’ve always loved watching the Olympic Games and that would be a dream come true to be part of the organising committee, especially if it was my home country (Sweden) hosting it. I want that feeling knowing that I’ve actually been there organising it and making it happen.

What is the best event you have ever attended?

Best event I ever attended would be the FIFA World Championship in Germany 2006. I went to one of the games there and the atmosphere was so good. Everyone was so happy and I had a blast and at the game. The atmosphere while watching the two teams, Germany and Mexico was incredible. You could feel the tension between the two sections where Germany had their supporters and Mexico theirs. It was amazing.

Student Spotlight: Introducing Liz Sekhan, Marketing Ambassador

Liz

Student Spotlight: Introducing Liz Sekhan, Marketing Ambassador

Hello, my name is Elizabeth (Liz) Sekhan, and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Business, majoring in International Event Management at BMIHMS. I am in my third year of study, and am based at the Sydney Campus.

I have been selected as, and am honoured to be, the BMIHMS Marketing Ambassador for the next two terms. I look forward to bringing you news and stories from the student body. I would like to make a start by introducing myself and tell you a little more about my background and future aspirations.

I grew up on a farm on the Victorian/New South Wales border, near a small town called Cobram. Cobram is situated on the beautiful Murray River. I love spending lots of time at the river, knee boarding, fishing and catching up with my friends. Adjusting to the busy Sydney lifestyle has definitely taking some getting used to; however I do love the experience of city living.

The most significant adjustment for me has been living away from my friends. At home I know plenty of people and always see people I know when I am out and about. However, I do love that the city has an endless supply of new and amazing restaurants to try. Making new friends to experience all these new things with and trying a different cuisine each time I go out is pretty awesome!

Growing up, I was always drawn to the hospitality industry. My aunty and uncle own and manage a restaurant during the winter season in the ski fields at Mount Hotham. I believe my passion for hospitality may have been sparked by their adventures.

Before beginning at BMIHMS, I was a ski Instructor working in both Australia and Canada. I spent a year and a half instructing; it was such an amazing time. When I was in Canada I knew that I was definitely going to come back to study at BMIHMS. I love the fact that we work hard, and get to graduate after 2.5 years. I was really drawn to the School because of the hands on learning and industry experience students gain. Having the opportunity to live in the Blue Mountains – at the Leura Campus – was really appealing too.

I completed my first placement at Crown Melbourne. I worked at 28 Sky Bar and Lounge, an exclusive bar on the top floor of Crown Metropol. During my six-month placement I was lucky enough to serve many famous people. My highlights were The Madden Brothers (Benji and Joel), Heston Blumenthal, Justice Crew, and hosting Eddy McGuire’s son’s 12th Birthday; yes, at the Crown!

My second placement was at a small events company in Sydney called the Event Emporium. I was part of their close-knit team. Before long they turned into my friends as well as my colleagues. It was a fantastic experience. I was able to travel to Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane, attend a Robbie Williams concert, go sailing on Sydney Harbour, and attend several luncheons at the Opera House.

When I graduate I want to take some time to explore Australia, possibly going on a road trip for a few months. Eventually I would like to head back to Canada or the United States and work in ski resorts. Here I would like to apply what I have learnt during my time at BMIHMS, and ideally coordinate and manage events. I feel that events within a ski resort would be very versatile and provide an interesting and an exciting career choice.

Until next time, . . Liz.
