Maxwell’s International Study Experience at BMIHMS
Maxwell

Max,

Maxwell’s International Study Experience at BMIHMS

Maxwell HerMaxwell Herbertbert is originally from Kendall College, where he will be graduating from in 2016 after spending a semester at BMIHMS, where he studied a Bachelor of Business in International Hotel and Resort Management. He recently moved back to Chicago to finish his studies and is currently working part time at Blue Plate catering. Gabriela Conti interviews Max for the BMIHMS BLOG.

Max, do you feel like this opportunity allowed you to grow professionally in the industry?
Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) provided many opportunities to allow each person to grow and develop as an industry professional. I had some industry experience before arriving and I believe that this school only offered more opportunities for me during my studies. The experiences I had, at school and on my industry placement, allowed me to grow as a professional, which are valuable now and for my future career upon graduation.

Tell me about your BMIHMS Industry Placement work experience?

For my industry placement I moved to Sydney to work with Aria Catering at the Sydney Opera House where I was a team member in the operations and the logistics departments. During this placement, I had the excellent opportunity to work on large and small scale events throughout the twenty-two different venues the Sydney Opera House supports. Additionally I was an Events Admin Intern with Funktionality Events and Experiences where I worked with the event stylist, producers, and managers of the company.

You came from Kendall College in Chicago USA. What are some of the differences between the schools?

I studied  at the Leura campus, and the big different was living on campus and being only minutes from my friends. Additionally, Leura operates as a functional hotel where Kendall is very similar to the Sydney campus where students live off campus and there is only one building. There is variety of differences such as Kendall being a culinary school on top of being a hospitality school, which provides real exposure to the hospitality students. Continuing on with the differences, Kendall College offers more degree options other than the Hotel and Event Management, these include Food and Beverage Management, Sports & Leisure Management, Beverage Management, Sustainability Management, and Asset Management. The last difference I will focus on is that Kendall does a six month final project where students in different degree courses work together to build an imaginary hotel in a real space throughout the city of Chicago.

Would you recommend this experience to your peers?

In a heartbeat. All of the opportunities that Australia has offered me, I will treasure for a lifetime. I have made lifelong friendships, had amazing industry experiences, and was able to travel throughout Australia. The fact that the hospitality industry is an international makes it important to get as much international exposure as possible.

Any advice for students wanting to study abroad?

I would say, do what I did. Honestly, I did as much as I possibly could – I think. When at school I was extremely active in and outside of the classroom. If I had to tell anyone, I would say to keep an open mind and take as many opportunities as possible because that will make your whole experience one of a lifetime, one that you will take away and remember for the rest of your life.

Honestly, it was one of the best experiences I have ever done.

Not much more for me to add there, thanks for your time Max. If you have ever considered studying abroad, BMIHMS have options to study in Spain, China, USA and Switzerland. You can find out more at: BMIHMS International Study Options

International Study and Placement Opportunities at BMIHMS

Sam,

International Study and Placement Opportunities at BMIHMS

One of my first tasks as marketing ambassador for the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School was to search out some great student stories from our current student body. I decided to bring you Mr. Sam Scanlan in the form of an interview for my first. Not only has he travelled to India to undertake one of his industry placements but he will graduate with a term spent in Switzerland as part of the BMIHMS Study Abroad program.

Interview: Sam Scanlan, undergraduate student, Bachelor of Business, Hotel and Resort Management

Do you feel like these opportunities allowed you to grow professionally in the industry?

Yes definitely, I was given the opportunity to explore the world – seeing new cultures and discovering a different service styles outside of Australia. Luxury service originated in Switzerland the region of many renowned hotel schools where I was fortunate to study.

Hospitality is all about travelling the world and gaining valuable experience and knowledge , I have started my career with opportunities in Australia, Europe and Asia.

I can showcase what I’ve learnt t to my future employers and I believe a competitive advantage.

Tell me about your experience industry placement in India?

India was an experience that I never will forget – being able to work in a country that is totally out of my comfort zone.

Learning their culture was a huge challenge – being able to gain acceptance from not only staff but also the society was a huge task.

In hindsight I am pleased to have been given the opportunity to experience Indian hospitality. Not many people do it – I wanted to do something else instead of Dubai or London – seeing something new and challenging was what I wanted.

What were some of the standout things about your Swiss education?

These schools were incredibly different in various ways highlights being:

Les Roches Food and Beverage – the culinary kitchen works on a huge scale with distinct sections for the students to complete practical with a huge variety of outlets and dishes prepared each day.
Les Roches Social Life – being a ‘family’ (where everyone seemed to know everyone) university there was a lot of social events that the Events Coordinators planned from rugby, basketball and cricket teams to compete against each other and other nearby schools to meet other people and remain fit.

Les Roches Career Development team in Switzerland provided me with endless contacts for internships. They had great expos. During the semester at least 25 hotel companies from around the world to do ‘on campus interviews’ to recruit for the intake period.

Have you any advice for students wanting to study abroad.

Research the university that they are going to. If it is a renowned global school that has a reputation for success it is a good option. I chose Les Roches for its history and global reputation.

Take a really friend. Having someone by your side if things aren’t going well especially at the start helps a lot.

It’s a once in a lifetime experience being able to study abroad – don’t ignore the opportunity.

Thanks Sam,

and over and out for me,

Gabriella Conti, International Event Management Student,
BMIHMS

BMIHMS STUDENTS FLOWN TO CAMBODIA FOR SALA BAI OPENING

       蓝山国际酒店管理学院(BMIHMS)学术研究主管(Head of Academic Studies) - 悉尼校区和劳瑞特大学(Laureate)的Here for Good奖项得主,Simon Pawson说:

BMIHMS STUDENTS FLOWN TO CAMBODIA FOR SALA BAI OPENING

BMIHMS recently sent its two Student Representative Council (SRC) presidents to Cambodia as official representatives for the opening of the new Sala Bai Hotel School campus in Cambodia.

The official opening was held on Saturday 27 February and was attended by several Cambodian Government Ministers, the French Ambassador to Cambodia, donors and supporters of Sala Bai.

Sala Bai is a free hotel school based in Siem Reap and every year, 100 young, underprivileged and often orphaned Cambodian teenagers attend to gain kitchen, restaurant, housekeeping and front of house skills.

Since 2004, BMIHMS has contributed more than $170,000, and has also sent over teachers and graduates to work on and develop programs, along with donating computers, books and other essential items and we’re thrilled to be part of the opening on their new campus.

BMIHMS Head of Academic Studies – Sydney and Laureate Here for Good Ambassador, Simon Pawson, said:

“Through our students, the ongoing support of Sala Bai is a great example of what BMIHMS is all about – the development of young leaders with high level business and practical skills, and a keen sense of corporate social responsibility.

“Giving our students the opportunity to witness firsthand the social and economic complexities in the developing world, and also how organisations such as Sala Bai are making a substantial difference to the lives of young people is a really rewarding experience for all of us at BMIHMS,” he said.
BMIHMS Sydney SRC President, Tavishi Khanna, said of the experience:

“I had a remarkable experience at the Sala Baï Hotel School. The enthusiasm and effort that went into our visit was very humbling. The best part of the visit was the two days we spent in class with the Sala Baï students. I was awestruck by their dedication and motivation to overcome their current economic situation through education. It gives me an immense sense of pride to know that the BMIHMS family has contributed to the success of this School.”

BMIHMS at Torrens University General Manager, Jerome Casteigt, said:

“Currently, Sala Baï continues the remarkable achievement of 100% graduate placement in hospitality positions. This accomplishment is even more heartening when we remember that, on average, every Sala Baï graduate supports 10 family members via their income. We look forward to continuing our commitment to this worthwhile cause with other initiatives in the future,” he said.

About Sala Bai

Sala Bai was established in Cambodia to address low school attendance among the population, and in particular the huge drop out rate of young girls leaving to help at home or get married. The School works to ensure greater vocational opportunities for its students, providing them with hospitality training and assisting them to find work on graduation.

Graduate Privileged Partners On Campus Recruitment Day A Success

BMIHMS at Torrens University hosted this year’s first Graduate Privileged Partners (GPP) ‘On Campus Recruitment Day’ last week at the Leura Campus. The ten GPP Partners brought over thirty-five industry representatives and recruiters. Representatives spoke directly with students about their properties, current, and future job opportunities, and completed speed interviews.

BMIHMS places a strong emphasis on the employability of its graduates, works closely with industry to build networks, and connects students with employers whilst studying and after graduation.

First year student, Sanila Khosla from India, said that she was going in with an open mind. “I want to see what each of the brands has to offer, and the opportunities they have available.”

Lauren Pietsch, originally from Newcastle now an undergraduate Hotel and Resort Management student, said that she had been able to meet with the brands she was keen to work for, and learn about others that she had not previously considered prior to attending.

Over six hundred students from Leura and Sydney Campus attended the event. They met with representatives from Accor, Sofitel, Four Seasons, IHG, Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Starwood, TFE and the newest brand to join the GPP, Crown Resorts. It was a great opportunity for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Student William Thackray was ecstatic, as he had just been put in contact with the Director of Food and Beverage at Hyatt.

Many students had prepared resumes and cover letters to enquire about opportunities available for industry placement roles. For graduating students, the day was the perfect opportunity to discuss full-time roles, and management trainee programs that the brands have available.

Assistant Human Resources Manager, Shauna Kleem from Starwood said:

“Today was a great opportunity for students to make themselves known with recruiters in the industry. Students who introduce themselves to us today and make themselves known, and go on to apply for a role with Starwood, will be more likely to be considered for a position.”

Students who the partners had previously met and identified as high potential were approached for one-on-one interviews. Those who had impressed the recruiters in the morning were also asked back for a more in-depth interview. Over 100 interviews were held with students on the day; an invaluable opportunity and experience for students, on location at their school.

BMIHMS hosts GPP On Campus Recruitment days twice a year, for all students. For more information about our Graduate Privileged Partners, click here.

How does it work?
Students apply for the BMIHMS GBM and if accepted can also elect to apply for the TUA MBA. Student will receive advanced standing for half of the MBA units if successfully completing the GBM. Students study the GBM face to face full time, whilst studying one MBA unit online concurrently each term (total 6 units). If students successfully complete the GBM and the 6 units of the MBA, they will graduate with both degrees.

Time to complete
Students will study the MBA online and concurrently with the GBM, allowing students to graduate with both degrees in two years. However, a student can enter the MBA at any point throughout their GBM studies and can take the MBA at their own pace.

When
