BMIHMS Academic Innovation

Juliet Tan:

BMIHMS Academic Innovation

We sat down with BMIHMS lecturer, Juliet Tan, to discuss how an innovative new course she helped develop is generating tangible student success stories.

“I’ve been teaching the Business Management and Entrepreneurship course for around three years now. I have a research background in the areas of service innovation and entrepreneurship, so it was a natural progression for me to bring this to life at BMIHMS. Some of my own research has gone into the course content, so it’s wonderful to see how well received it has been amongst the student population.

“For the course, students are challenged to come up with an innovative new idea, which will improve a specific business in some way. Last year, we presented them with a specific business problem on behalf of VIBE Hotels. The dilemma was that 60% of the time, their conference rooms remained empty or unused, and they were therefore asked to come up with a solution to the problem.

“One of our groups actually developed an app which effectively ensured that the conference room space would be sold off within a 30 day period,” Ms Tan said.

As one of the two top ideas in the class, this group was then invited to pitch their idea directly to senior TFE Hotel Group staff, including Matt Nixon, Managing Director of Innovation; Emma Fraser, National Director of Marketing; and Ben Lacken, Learning & Development Manager.

“After the group presented their idea, the staff members were absolutely blown away by it. As a direct result of this project, the group leader, Erika Shen, was offered a graduate role within the company, and she is still employed with them today.
“I think the success of our students is really a reflection of the fact that we are developing subjects that provide them with real skills, resulting in work ready graduates.

“In the second week of this subject, we are already expecting students to start formulating ideas. By week five, they need to present their initial ideas, at which point we will give them detailed feedback and guidance. After this, they are required to develop a full business plan, before finally reaching the presentation stage at the end of the term.

“The intention is to get them to think creatively; to come up with realistic, practical products or services that are implementable. In addition, equipping them with these skills so early makes them more employable when they reach the end of their degrees,” Ms Tan said.

Michelle Bevan, Director of Human Resources for TFE Hotels, said of the partnership:

“TFE Hotels has a longstanding relationship with BMIHMS. Many of our team members have attended the School as hotel management students, and we’re particularly invested in helping to nurture the next generation of hoteliers.

“We thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to mentor and prepare them for successful careers in the hospitality industry. Whenever we work with BMIHMS, we know that we are working with some of the best and brightest hospitality management students in the country.

“Courses like this one truly give students invaluable personal and professional experience. We’re pleased that it has been such a success and we look forward to working with BMIHMS on many more innovative projects in the future.”

Student spotlight: Tomas Podborsky

      Tomas Podborsky

Student spotlight: Tomas Podborsky

Alyssa Bennett, BMIHMS Marketing Ambassador, chats to fellow student Tomas Podborsky, getting the lowdown on his Industry Placement in Perth and life in general at BMIHMS.

Tomas Podborsky, an international student from The Czech Republic is currently undertaking aBachelor of Business specialising in Event Management and has recently completed his Industry Placement at Crown Perth.

BMIHMS first introduced Tomas to Crown Hotels during a guest lecture in his first year.

“It was the best guest speaker presentation I had heard. It inspired me to want to work for them,” he said.

“Students were amazed by the Crown brand and were lining up afterwards to hand out their resumes. I was very excited to be one of those to receive a call back and was thrilled to be offered a place in the Crown Perth team.

“I worked for Crown as part of my first Industry Placement (IP). This meant moving to Perth, a beautiful Australian city that is quite busy in the CBD, but as soon as I left the centre, I found myself in many quiet zones near beautiful parks with gorgeous views.

“Perth is full of cafes and small bars with a very friendly vibe. It reminded me a little of Prague, my home, even though the culture of Australia is very different and much more open from Czech. Australians are more talkative; the relaxed lifestyle and multicultural society is great and my time here it has definitely brought out a different and more open side of my personality.

“At work it didn’t take long to get to know my way around and I learned quickly. The more confidence I had the more I started to really enjoy my work. I worked long hours, but it rarely felt like it. It was such a big and dynamic environment. The staff members of Crown Perth were welcoming and I fitted in straight away. I enjoyed the teamwork and the style of service that was provided on a daily basis. I found that my managers were very approachable, always available and really enjoyed their work. If they were ever strict, it would always motivate the team to deliver the excellent service that Crown stands for.

“Crown Perth exposed me to a variety of events –the opportunities were amazing. I was involved in cocktail parties, conferences, gala dinners, weddings (with several different international flavours), VIP guest events, Chinese banquets and more. The size of the events varied from 10 to over 1000 guests. One event that stuck in my memory was a fundraising gala dinner, where the guests enjoyed their dinner while watching live boxing matches in a ring placed in the middle of the grand ballroom. Guests were standing, chanting and supporting the fighters. It was such an amazing atmosphere.

“My experience in Australia at BMIHMS and with Crown Perth was definitely worth traveling across the world for. I would recommend Crown for all students that seek a dynamic working environment, and are looking for a fun Industry Placement.
“Crown Resorts has recently become one of the School’s Industry Partners, forming an official connection with the BMIHMS. The School is expecting to send many more students to have work experiences and develop their career prospects through this connection.”

Tomas is about to embark on his second Industry Placement through BMIHMS and his International Event Management Degree. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to hearing more from him on his return.

Many thanks to Tomas Podborsky for sharing your story.

Alyssa Bennett, Student Ambassador.

BMIHMS Alumni Mentoring Program

BMIHMS Alumni Mentoring Program

Nicolas Gomez is on many levels a model Blue Mountains International Hotel Management (BMIHMS) student. In his final weeks of study (Master in International Hotel Management), he takes time out to discuss his last 6 months and how the BMIHMS Alumni Mentoring Program has contributed to his career.

If you asked Nicolas why he joined the program, his answer is simple. “Why not?”

“This program is an opportunity in addition to classes and is free of charge, and I have always tried to take advantage of the exclusive opportunities that the school has offered me,” he says.

After successfully applying for the program, Nicolas was allocated BMIHMS alumnus Tish Nyar, Area General Manager Rydges Hotels & Resorts, Rydges Sydney Airport, as his mentor. Whilst the initial introduction comes from the mentor, the students are in charge of the communication and drive their own mentoring programs. How often they meet their mentor or remain in contact with them is entirely in their hands.

Nicolas chose to meet face-to-face as Tish is based in Sydney, and following their initial meeting they also communicated via email. Depending on what Nicolas wanted advice on, he would guide his communication accordingly. Big questions or more complicated discussions warrant a face-to-face meeting, while simpler issues were easily discussed via email.

Nicolas used his new connection and professional advice from Tish as part of the many influences he brings together to formulate his decision-making. Whilst not the only point of view in the mix, Tish has been influential in mapping out Nicolas’s career pathway, brand choices and directions in hospitality both in and out of hotels.

This isn’t a chance for students to apply for work, but an opportunity to help them prepare for the bigger picture– their future. Nicolas says that Tish has been instrumental in assisting with connections and advice both academically and professionally during their time together. He advises students for future programs to take up this opportunity and approach it with confidence. “Get to know your mentor personally to establish a better connection, this will definitely maximise the outcomes,” he says.

The Alumni Mentoring Program is open for all students in their last 6 months of study. Applications close for the next program on 16 October 2015. Enquiries should be made to the BMIHMS Career Development Department.

Alyssa

Introducing… Alyssa
Alyssa

www.hamiltonisland.com.au/bars-and-clubs/bommie-deck.

www.matakaurilodge.com

Introducing… Alyssa

Hi, my name is Alyssa Bennett and I am currently studying my bachelor of business degree in International Hotel and Resort Management at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS).

I am originally from country Victoria and I chose to go to BMIHMS to be part of the hospitality industry. I knew early on that I wanted a job that was diverse, challenging and would allow me to travel.
My initial taste of travel came with my first Industry Placement (IP) undertaken on Hamilton Island as a Food & Beverage Attendant at Bommie Deck, www.hamiltonisland.com.au/bars-and-clubs/bommie-deck. It was the first time I had been to a resort and I loved the tropical experience; the work and out-of-work lifestyle. This fast paced environment and the unique challenges that remote location offers combined with a beautiful setting is certainly something I wish to repeat in my career.
All set to begin a second IP and expand my experience in resorts I further challenged myself by finding a property overseas. Matakairi Lodge in Queenstown, New Zealand is situated on Lake Wakatipu and offers breathtaking panorama views throughout the property. It is here I worked as a receptionist for six months as part of my degree.
This luxurious property is styled by acclaimed interior designer Virginia Fisher. It offers only 16 guest rooms each with private balconies looking over mountain ranges with a sitting area and fireplace, walk in wardrobes and luxurious bathrooms. www.matakaurilodge.com

My role was diverse and nothing likes what you would imagine a receptionists’ role to be. Duties consisted of general guest services, concierge, communications, guest activities and night audit. Booking guest activities including; golf, horse ridding, helicopter fishing, water sports, adrenalin sports, wine tours and scenic flights with personal pilots.

As Matakauri Lodge is a Relais & Chateaux property offer all guests personalised dinning experiences. The Head Chef, Jonathan Rogers creates individual menus to all guests, daily. The meals focus on what the guest preferences are with a focus on modern New Zealand cuisine.

Initially I was a little intimidated, it was overwhelming at first, but with time and ongoing training I soon settled into my role and felt comfortable dealing with the demands expected of me. Guest expectations are very high and being accountable to this was challenging.

All staff members of Matakauri Lodge have the responsibility to provide all guests with a memorable stay, a stay that is talked about being “The best I have ever had”.

In everything that we do we have our guest in mind, assisting them in anyway possible. Observation and thoughtfulness is key to the success of this property. Personal profiles of all guests are made for return visits to the to continue to improve on their experience.

I made notes on what activities they attended, how they like their coffee/tea, and amenities they prefer in their rooms. These are part of the little things that distinguish a stay at this luxury lodge from other five star properties.

Am I going to base my career on resort management? I am still deciding. However I would not have given up these experiences for the world.

What Is Life Really Like At Australia’s No.1 Hotel Management School?
Ever wondered what a career in hospitality management really looks like? The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) gave prospective students the chance to experience it firsthand at an Open Day last weekend.
The free event saw more than 70 visitors attend the BMIHMS Leura Campus, receiving personalised tours of BMIHMS’ housekeeping, front office and food and beverage departments and participating in activities to give them insight into what student life is really like.
Attendees chatted to current students and staff about topics including paid placement opportunities at some of the leading international hotels and resorts worldwide and the benefits of working in one of the fastest growing industries in the world.
An international buffet lunch was provided, along with activity stalls representing cultures from all around the world including Vietnam, Hong Kong, India, Europe, Africa and Indonesia. The stalls featured students in traditional dress, food, activities, games and live music.
BMIHMS General Manager, Jerome Casteigt, said:“Truly, the BMIHMS student experience is unlike any other. Our courses offer a very unique combination of theoretical coursework and practical hands on experience to ensure our students are work ready when they graduate. Many of them receive job offers well before that, thanks to our strong industry partnerships and connections around the world.
“Our Open Day is one of the most popular events we run each year and one of the best opportunities prospective students have to gain real insight into the BMIHMS experience. We’re looking forward to another successful event in 2016,” he said.
Applications are now open for BMIHMS’ October intake.
