Having never experienced working in the hospitality industry or being employed for a sustained period of time, I was presented with the opportunity to work for Hamilton Island - a prestigious holiday destination in Queensland, Australia. It wasn’t seen as the ideal work placement for a first experience due to the fact that it was on an island and it was a remote destination away from the city. However I saw it as an exciting prospect and one that would help me build a solid foundation in the hospitality industry. It proved to be the right decision as the knowledge and skills I gained from the island and the experience it offered, is what I now carry everywhere.
我此前从未在服务业工作过,也没有长久地供职过哪里,但却拥有了在澳大利亚昆士兰州的度假胜地汉密尔顿岛工作的机会。虽然对于初次体验来说,这份实习工作并不完美,因为工作地点在远离城市的岛屿上。不过,我却对这份工作充满期待,觉得很有可能就此打下在服务业工作的坚实基础。事实证明,这个决定是正确的。在岛上所学到的知识技能,包括这次经历本身在内,如今都让我获益匪浅。
As a food and beverage attendant on Hamilton Island, I was involved with setting up the restaurant, clearing tables, greeting customers, taking orders, upselling products and other restaurants closing tasks. Although I was given a brief introduction to the restaurant process, a lot of the time it was on the job training as well as self -teaching many skills. I learnt how to work as a team but to also to be independent and to trust and believe in myself. By doing this I was able to accept new challenges that I was faced with daily. A quote I will always take on that was told to me by my manager was "Thanushi, you have to work smart, not hard." Though it was difficult to adjust to the island life, by the end of my six months I can gladly say I accomplished my goal of my placement, which was "to be able to greet customers and provide a professional and smooth food and beverage service during their time at the restaurant within six months on the island." I made countless mistakes almost everyday and was very upset yet, I never showed my weaknesses and pushed through and it felt very good to be recognised for living up to the employee standards of the island at the end of my placement by my manager. This experience on the island showed me why I chose to study and be in the hospitality industry in the first place. I got the chance to live on an exotic destination, meeting all sorts of people and got a chance to make their stay on the property, memorable. This industry is where I love to work in and so far I got to interact with people through my passion for food and beverage. If you love what you do, do not let anything get in the way and if you ever get the chance to learn, always take the opportunity, as you never know where it can lead you! Do not be afraid of the places you go on your placement, every place will teach you something new!
在汉密尔顿岛,作为一名饮食服务员,我的工作内容包括布置餐厅,清理餐桌,招呼顾客,服务顾客点菜,增值销售产品以及协助其他餐馆打烊。虽然餐饮服务程序的介绍很简短,但是岗位培训和技能的自我训练却用时不短。我学会了如何进行团队工作,同时也学会了怎样变得独立和自信。这样一来,我也可以应对每日工作中的新挑战了。我不会忘记经理说过的一句话,“塔努西,工作要巧妙,苦干没成效”。岛上的生活适应起来不太容易,但是在为期六个月的工作结束时,我很开心能够完成自己的岗位目标,那就是“在岛上的半年,要学会招呼顾客,顾客来到餐厅,就要为其提供专业可口的饮食”。我几乎每天都错误不断,虽然因此感觉沮丧,但我从未退怯,总是努力排除困难。最后,经理认为我达到了岛上的员工标准,这感觉真的很棒。岛上的经历让我明白,为什么将服务业作为我首选的学习和工作方向。这次机会让我得以在度假胜地生活,与各种人接触,让人们对这个地方难以忘怀。我爱这个行业,借由对餐饮的热爱,我跟人们交流和打交道。如果你热爱自己的工作,就不要让任何事情成为阻碍。如果有学习机会,请一定要抓住它,因为你并不知道它会将你带往何方!不要对实习地点有畏惧心理,每个地方都会有新的体验!
