Student Life at Blue Mountains – Bondi Beach Day Out

January 5th, 2015

BMIHMS Student, Amy Lawry’s Bondi Diary

Bondi Beach is approximately 2 hours drive from Leura and the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School campus. It’s one of the most famous beaches in Australia. So naturally the first excursion for students organised by the 2014 Term 4 SRC was a trip to Bondi!

It was an early morning start at 8:15am and the trip down the mountains seemed to be made longer by the backtracking to pick up teachers and staff. In some ways that made the trip all the more fun as the whole bus was able to get involved cheering the newcomers, not to mention the weather became warmer as we drove.

On arrival, we banded together as a team to unload the bus and find the perfect place to set up our BBQ. The Blue Mountains teachers: Chris, Jo, Chef Neale and Kurt were all left to organise lunch while the students were ready to hit the sand for some sun. A few ran straight to the water, others grabbed the football and started throwing it around, while the rest lay out on their towels simply relaxing.

An hour later and the BBQ was fired up with enough sausages and steaks to feed a small army. We all gathered around to feast while Jo and Chris argued about how slow the BBQ actually was. Meanwhile, the actual chef among us sat back and watched. Good times and more than enough smiles and laughter to go around followed.

After lunch it was free time for everyone to do what they wanted. Some went wandering around the stores in the area. Others took the picturesque walk along the cliff to see the multitudes of local artworks and the magnificent scenery. Those that stayed on the beach were able to participate in the good old Australian tradition of beach cricket. Students and teachers played together and the competition got pretty fierce between them.

Half of our group decided to extend their stay and opted to stay in Sydney overnight and make their own way back to the school. By 3:30pm though it was time for the other half of us to head back to the bus for the long trek home.  Many were tired and fell asleep, but a quick stop at McDonald’s along the highway soon perked up everyone’s spirits.

All in all,  the trip was a success. Everyone seems to have enjoyed the chance to escape the pressures of school and let loose with some good salty air.
