Degree Courses that Ensure Graduates are Industry Ready
BMIHMS Prepares Students with Industry Skills and Knowledge
The hospitality industry worldwide is confronted with the problem of attracting and retaining quality employees, which has lead to a shortage of skilled personnel to staff the large number of hospitality businesses. With new hotels being built everyday this issue is growing with many complexities. One of the key contributors that have added to the skills shortage is a large number of academically qualified young graduates who are leaving the industry or even failing to enter the industry upon graduation.
Over recent years qualified, but unprepared graduates’ are leaving the industry upon graduation. Looking at education models there has been a trend for university degrees to be offered as broad degrees with specific majors. This has been the case with hospitality programs, which are increasingly being taught as majors, commonly within business degrees. These broad programs do not necessarily train students for the unique working conditions that careers in the industry will provide. Hospitality Management professionals require practical hands on personalised teaching. Many of these degrees have no practical training components within the curriculum, as teaching small classes is not seen to be cost effective, and many universities do not see it as the role of Higher Education to provide students with practical skills.
Additionally many of these programs do not require students to undertake industry placements or internships or, if they do, these are quite often unstructured and not well developed. A structured industry placement is very important, as a student’s experience working in an industry, whilst studying, will impact their decision to pursue a career in that industry.
Course Structure
Recognising and acting upon industry feedback and trends Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) deliver bachelor or business and master degree courses that combine business management theory with practical learning and structured work placements to provide a holistic approach to education, which ensures graduates have the skills and knowledge that is highly desired by hospitality employers. Courses are tailored to industry requirements, have practical Food and Beverage, Rooms Division and Front Office operation units built in to the curriculum. All degree courses contain industry placements, which provide realistic work experiences that prepare students for their first professional role upon graduation. Significantly, Industry Placements within hotels in Australia are paid.
Graduate Privileged Partners Program
To ensure the success of this program, BMIHMS has long standing relationships with international hospitality organisations that work with us and actively recruit our students. With organisations including: Accor, Sofitel, Four Seasons, IHG, Hilton, Hyatt, Marriot, Starwood and TFE Hotels we have an extensive network of industry partners.
Furthering our industry connections is ‘The Graduate Privileged Partners Program’. This was established in 2007 in response to a skills shortage in Australia. At the time, our Leura campus was being inundated with requests from the industry requiring staff. BMIHMS used this demand for students as an opportunity to enhance our teaching and strengthen the curriculum, whereby developing our students’ confidence in the workplace. The Graduate Privileged Partners Program (GPP) is a competitive recruitment initiative designed to connect our highest achieving undergraduate, (Hotel and Resort Management, Events Management and Restaurant and Catering Management) and postgraduate (Hotel Management and Global Business Management) students with a select group of industry partners. This program provides a unique opportunity for the hospitality industry to recruit and guide our top graduates towards the senior hotel management roles of the future.
Three Pillars Approach
At all BMIHMS campuses, we celebrate the personal achievements of many fine young people from all over the world who have attended our Schools. The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School makes a difference because we offer an enriched learning experience we call the ‘Three Pillar’ approach to hospitality management education endorsing these educational values, beliefs and teaching philosophies. These values are expressed in terms of Professional and Personal Growth, Practical Skills Development and Academic Achievement. This approach values a student’s personal development just as highly as their academic performance.
BMIHMS measures the success of this approach through the industry recognition received over many years including the 2014 Australian Tourism Gold Award for Tourism Education and Training, as well as being recognised as the number 1 International Hospitality Management School in Asia Pacific and number 8 in the world by the TNS worldwide survey of hospitality employers (2013).
