Tonia

Things to do before I die . . .
Welcome to my first blog . . I’m Tonia
Probably many of us have his personal bucket list of ‘things to do before you die’. My ambitious plan is to travel at least 40 different countries in the world. Don’t ask me why 40. So here I am, on my way to the next destination – country of OZ.
The gentleman sitting next to me on the plane started speaking to me: “Well this is 9 hours flight…”. (For me it was already 20 hours since I left Moscow Sheremetjevo Airport) “So where are you from?” (first thing he asked).
In short, I am a Russian-Vietnamese student, traveling to study my last year of a Hospitality Management Degree that I started in Switzerland, Glion Institute of Higher Education. Given the opportunity to transfer to Australian sister school, I made a spontaneous decision to travel to another side of the world. Doing so of course I can add another country to my list of 40.
After such a long flight, I needed a coffee to keep me up for another hour until I reached campus. I didn’t expect that ordering coffee would be so confusing ordeal. When I simply ask for the cup of Americano, the waitress looked at me if I was speaking Russian. The girl politely smiled back: ”Welcome to Australia”. Second after I realised that Americano here is called Long Black. It was just one of the first Australian lessons I have learnt.
The ‘coffee’ situation brought me to the idea of how I could describe this country. All different coffee drinks are prepared from the same ingredient – coffee beans. Lets say this is what I would call as Australian culture and mentality. Though it is so multinational and diverse just like hundreds different type of coffee drinks; flat white, soya cappuccino, long or short black, skinny vienna coffee, decaf soya latte and the list goes on.
Sydney being mish mash of American, European and Asian cultures, they have all had a great influence. However, Australia creates its own unique aspects too with its relaxed attitude towards life. I was amazed by the contrast of regulatory, right lifestyle and absolute freedom of spirit with slight “wildness” and creativity of expressing oneself. Others opinion and judgment doesn’t matter as much as your own choice and comfort. You could be wearing Urban outfit or vintage dresses, sandals or high heels, riding a bike or driving a van, performing in the street for the public, surfing the ocean or attending world class art exhibitions, theatrics, or just sitting on the beach reading your favorite book. It’s exclusiveness is shaped by the diversity of people and their life stories.
Taking a risk to travel to a ‘far far away’ land, I believe this is a great place to find my true identity and achieve self-realisation. But for now, my priority is to enjoy student life in the cosmopolitan city of Sydney along with busy academic schedule.
P.S. For those students who wonders of things to do in Sydney not just visiting common touristic sightseeing, pop in the Time Out Site (link is below). Here you can find information on all events and trendy spots for different days depends on your interest.
