The train to Leura leaves Sydney Central station at 2.18pm. Unfortunately, due to an unprecedented sunny day, I missed the 2.18pm train.
I also missed the following six trains, only dragging my bags into Sydney’s metaphorical center when the sun had taken its leave and day had given way to night.
Somewhere in the midst of the awe-struck tourists, the weary-eyed commuters and the unkempt backpackers, I spotted one of my classmates – another victim of the day’s fortunate weather.
I spent this third train ride to Leura in much the same manner that I spent my previous two trips – with an overpriced, overfilled cup of below-average decaf coffee, a good book, and several half-successful attempts at a nap. A short taxi ride and a late-night check-in later and I was in bed, dreaming of the four days of the practical housekeeping component (MHC603: Hotel Operations) that would follow.
For the better part of a year, a few years ago, I was working in a small resort back home in Canada. I tried my hand in several different departments, but, save for one night when a kindly old lady called the front desk requesting that her bed be remade, I never held the title of housekeeper. I remember thinking to myself, as I tried my best to get this kindly old lady’s bed to look like all the other beds on the resort, “this is much harder than it looks”.
The four days of practical training at the Blue Mountains Hotel Management School’s housekeeping department reaffirmed my suspicion. I had had my reservations as to whether I would learn anything at all this week, but, under the guidance of four truly superb and genuine trainers who drew on real-world experience, I picked up a basic understanding of the trade, had a few laughs, and, on a few occasions, even felt like a housekeeper.
I thought of asking the housekeeping team to come back to Sydney with me, but I could see they were needed in Leura. I returned to Sydney, alone, with the knowledge that housekeeping was not only far more physically demanding than I had ever imagined, but that its importance in the accommodation sector is far too often overlooked.
