O Week at Bondi
A day in the BlueMountains International Hotel Management School O’Week Masters Program: at Bondi Beach
In my last blog Iwrote about being nervous. Nerves were quickly pushed aside as Orientation Weekwas pretty interesting. I would really like to share the thoughts and feelingsI have gotten from this time.
It was initially acloudy day and I woke up in the morning looking forward to knowing that todaywas scheduled a trip to Bondi Beach. Not a badinclusion to O’ Week I thought.
I was one of thefirst to arrive at the Sydneycampus and gradually the other new students arrived. We were separated intogroups of 4 to 5 people and were given an interesting information pack: a map,a paper with an explanation of what we should do along with a questionnaire and-surprisingly lovely- band-aids and money! – Very thoughtful of them, isn’t it?
The challenge wasto go to Bondi Beach and explore each part of it so wecould answer questions from a quiz,. The answers could be found in the areaaround the beach they were written on signs and buildings etc.
But now comes whatthis experience really meant to me: It was one of my first days in Sydney or rather, in Australia. All I had visited sincethat moment was George Street(the School) and back and forth to my accommodation. I was pretty scared I hadno idea of how to get to Bondi Beach.
I was lucky! Thepeople from my group had already a good idea of how to get there – which mademe feel kind of stupid, but less afraid of getting lost. I don’t remember howmany groups there were in total, but perhaps because we were all feeling alittle insecure- my group joined another group so we made a bigger group, whichwas awesome because we could share opinions and discoveries in order to answerthe questions whilst we were there.
We got a train to Bondi Junction and another bus to Bondi Beach. I don’t know if itwas the best choice or the shorter way, but I was so glad that I did as I saw alot of Sydneyon the way. My emotions were all over the place -a mixture of excitement, fearand anxiety for all the new experiences. Looking out the bus window I realisedthat Sydney wasmuch bigger then I thought.
I was just lovingit, and it was only the beginning!
When we got to Bondi Beachand I saw the view, my first thought was ‘Wow’ What a beautiful beach!Resembling a cove, starting and ending in rocks it was so nice. It is Winterthat and a Winter festival was going on, but what surprised me was that therewas an ice skating rink on the sand! That is something I would never see whereI come from, the ice would melt in a minute exposed to the hot Winter weatherof Brazil.
Still feeling liketourist, we took lots of pictures, from the birds to Icebergs (Bondi SwimmingClub), from the cafes to the whole landscape. The sun came out, the water wasshinning and the students started to explore the area looking for the answersto the questions we had in our hands. It was easy to be distracted.
After coming backto Blue Mountains International Hotel Management SchoolI realised that the experience I had just been through had made me feel moreconfident and willing to explore the whole city. I had seen how much was onoffer and that I was so close to so many beautiful places from where I hadchosen to live and study.
It was akick-start for me to begin exploring the city without fear of getting lost ornot knowing where to go. Better understanding of my new hometown made it feelmore like home and that is the most important thing when you start to liveabroad. Thanks Blue Mountains!
Cheers!
