Making it through Year 1 was a big accomplishment, but making it through Year 2 feels like I am more than half way through my degree.
Busy, busy, busy, waking up 5am for Mentoring Scholarship Student kitchen shifts, attending classes, running around to clear Student Council accounts from the previous day, attending Student Council meetings, being part of the student café and finishing assignments was my life as a Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School year two student!
I took up all these responsibilities at the beginning of my second year at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School to test myself. With commitment and determination to achieve and get involved with School life I knew I would be rewarded if successful. Getting involved and participating to the highest-level possible allows me to find new strengths and have practical experience in so many different areas. I love the challenge.
Second year students at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School are required to complete as part of the practical requirement of the degree a stint in the housekeeping and front office departments. I began in the front office where I learnt various things, including, checking guests in and out, posting expenses in Opera, dealing with customer complaints, responsibilities of cash float and working as a professional team member that deals directly with customers.
I enjoyed working front of house, when it came to working behind the scenes, in housekeeping, I thought ‘not a chance’! Time to skip town. As discussed before, many things at the Hotel School were extremely difficult. I have never really done anything for myself back home. Spending hours washing hotel linen and making up guest rooms was not my idea of a future career or study plan.
The amazing housekeeping team of staff; Ms Jakus, Shirley, Dianne and Eden, created a very supportive environment to learn in- and learn I have done.
Whilst I may not choose to follow this stream when I graduate from the Hotel School I know what a hard job it can be. I understand many of the complexities that occur in this department and how critical it is to hotel operations. After all what is a hotel without clean sheets?
I had many memorable experiences as a second year student and created memories and friends that would last forever.
Best described by Christopher Columbus once said, ‘You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore,’ this is my experience at the Blue Mountains Hotel Management School.
Looking forward to the final chapter of my university life, Year 3!
