With lots of love,

I initially found the prospect of making new friendships daunting. Friendships for me were built over time, 14 years of schooling at the one place; I felt a great loss of separation. From the beginning it seemed it would take years to build friendships like I had left behind in Thailand. My high school provided me a social safety net.
The diverse number of different cultures amongst the student body is overwhelming. I am Thai; I share a room with another student from France, I have a numerous number of nationalities in every class I attend.
As students we work together often roll-playing hospitality scenarios, and work our way through the academic program often in groups. The live in environment creates a close-knit student body, an encouraging student body that help one another with assignments, studying for quizzes, tests and exams. Higher education studies are hard but they can be pretty fun too.
I enjoyed the rush of organising Hotel School events, doing ‘all niters’ when assignments are due, helping each other when one is sick, attending mentoring scholarship program and student council meetings together on campus. On weekends we are never alone and often in Sydney, CBD or Bondi Beach, one of my favourite places.
I had a standing date with Alex (fellow SRC) every Thursday night often bringing one another home at 2am in the right state. Fortunately the close living quarters mean someone will get you out of bed no matter what you have done the night before. Someone will always help you from getting caught doing anything wrong by the duty manager. The list is ongoing, it was all so much fun.
The difficult tasks are often the ones I remember with the most humour. The difficult tasks helped us really get to know one another from napkin folding to cleaning the toilet bowl. (ok so I don’t miss that!)
My favourite times were during café nights, school parties and even getting ready for school parties, there is always someone around and is is always fun. Spending days and nights with each other has brought me close to so many people at this school. With their help, encouragement and friendship I have flourished.
Today, I can confidently say I have best friends from all different parts of the world, including, France, Australia, Norway, Sweden, India, Mexico, Ecuador, Vietnam, Korea and many more, even new friends from my own country, Thailand!
I love each and every one of them so much that whenever I think of them, my heart says, “that is where my heart is…” – (they know who they are!)
Looking forward to reconnecting for my final semester in Sydney.
With lots of love,
Jyotika
