April 9th, 2014
My name is Sarah. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School in Sydney, Australia. I have been studying here for a year so far and I still have one more year to go. Originally I come from New Jersey in the United States. I completed my undergraduate degree in Marketing & Communications, before deciding to get my postgraduate degree.
This is not my first time studying in Australia. While I was at university I spent 5 months doing a “study abroad” course in Sydney. I was living in Coogee Beach and attending classes at UNSW. During that time I fell in love with Australia. One of the main reasons I chose to come to BMIHMS is because I wanted to return to Sydney. In addition, I had some previous experience in Event Management. I was looking for a postgraduate course that was related to events. That is how I began looking into hospitality programs and eventually came across the Blue Mountains Hotel School.
A typical week for me here in Sydney includes 2-3 days that I have class, 3-4 shifts at work, and 1-2 days that are completely free for me to do schoolwork, relax, or hang with friends. Some of my favourite things to do in Sydney are walking around the city or going to the beach. The two main tourist areas are Darling Harbour and Circular Quay. Both are beautiful to walk around on a nice day. I also love going to markets. My favourite markets that I’ve been to so far are in The Rocks and Paddington. Australia has a very popular “café-culture” so it’s also a delicious treat to have breakfast or lunch at a nice café. The beaches around Sydney are beautiful. I love to go for coastal walks as well as just tanning and swimming.
I think that I’ve got a great balance between school, work, and fun. I am always able to complete my assignments, work my 40 hours per fortnight, and still have time to do the things I love around Sydney.
Sarah,
Year 2
Masters of International Hotel Management
