第一篇博客……初到悉尼的日子
Generally speaking, I am unaware of the steps that people take when they decide to move to a foreign country to study for a two-year stint.
一般来说，我从未注意过人们决定到国外学习2年会有什么样的计划。
My approach involved memorizing some stats from the 2000 Summer Olympics, brushing up on my knowledge of a few operas, booking a two-night stay in a hostel and hopping on a plane. When I landed in Sydney, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into.
我的方法就是看看2000年夏季奥运会的一些数据，重温一下我对一些歌剧的了解，在旅馆定两晚的客房，然后登上飞机。当我到达悉尼后，我并不知道自己会遇到什么样的事情。
My hostel was conveniently located a five-minute walk from Kings Cross: a train station which I imagined would bear a striking resemblance to the one in London which I had read about when I was younger. As I walked past the adult bookstores and strip clubs, stepping over the odd beer bottle or sleeping person, I began to discount the possibility that a magical train would be coming to carry students to a castle where they might learn about witchcraft and wizardry.
我住的旅馆离Kings Cross火车站仅有5分钟的路程，我认为这个车站和我年轻时读到的有关伦敦的车站极像。当我走过成人书店和脱衣舞俱乐部，踩到奇怪的啤酒瓶或睡在大街上的人，我开始怀疑这辆神奇的火车载着学生到城堡学习巫术和魔法的可能性。
As it turned out, staying in a hostel was a stellar idea. Not only did I meet people from all around the world who were visiting Sydney for all different reasons, but the Australian hostel owners had a knowledge of cheap food, good music and top attractions that seemed to have no limit.
结果，呆在旅馆才是最好的方法。我不仅遇到了来自世界各地因为各种不同的原因而来到悉尼的人，而且旅馆老板知道很多物美价廉的美食、美妙的音乐和好玩的景点。
My two-night stay turned into a two-week stay, and, as much as I enjoyed it there, I think my studies would have suffered had I stretched it to a two-year stay. I moved out a week later, after my daily (oftentimes hourly) searches of the online classifieds yielded a cozy room in Darlinghurst, and have been living in relative peace and quiet ever since.
本来只有2天的旅行最后变成了2周，我虽然很喜欢住在这儿，但是我觉得如果我在这儿住上两年我的学业会受到影响。在我每天（经常都是几个小时）例行的网上查询到达令赫斯特（Darlinghurst）的舒适房间一周后，我搬出了旅馆，从那以后我住在了一个相对平和安静的地方。
